However on this occasion it&#8217;s a good thing, I actually sent my daughter to Mars, but forgot, oops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously I didn&#8217;t send her in person, but a few years ago NASA gave people the opportunity to send names of explorers into space on the next mission to Mars. Being a newish dad at the time, with a keen interest in space, I filled out the forms in her name and then forgot all about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week with the fantastic news of the successful landing of the Perseverance rover and the accompanying news stories, this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/perseverance-nasas-rover-takes-11-million-earthling-names-to-mars-12228745\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a> in particular triggered a memory, and remembered I had applied to send my daughter&#8217;s name to Mars too, long before the rover had been named Perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I managed to login and retrieve her &#8220;boarding pass&#8221; to show her, as well as the three silicon squares her name was etched onto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/BoardingPass_MyNameOnMars_Mars20202.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/BoardingPass_MyNameOnMars_Mars20202.png 640w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/BoardingPass_MyNameOnMars_Mars20202-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/skynews-mars-rover-perseverance_5284918.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/skynews-mars-rover-perseverance_5284918.png 768w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/skynews-mars-rover-perseverance_5284918-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Picture: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She couldn&#8217;t believe what she was hearing, her name had been sent millions of miles to a different planet, pretty hard for me as an adult to get my head around, let alone a 6 year old. We have been looking up all things, space and Mars quite a bit of this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well done NASA, it&#8217;s things like this that really get children&#8217;s imagination&#8217;s whiring.
