{"id":58,"date":"2020-06-12T19:41:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T18:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/?p=58"},"modified":"2020-08-19T20:16:25","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T19:16:25","slug":"rpi-poe-hat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/12\/rpi-poe-hat\/","title":{"rendered":"RPi \u2013 POE HAT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I finally received my delivery of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpc.farnell.com\/raspberry-pi\/rpi3-modbp-poe\/poe-hat-for-raspberry-pi-3b-4b\/dp\/SC14980?MER=sy-me-pd-mi-alte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">POE HATs for my RPi4\u2019s today from CPC<\/a>, and surprised at how easy they were to fit and get working. This is the first time I have used POE, and made sense to power my Pi bramble this way due to limited sockets where the setup will eventually live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I purposefully got a switch which had POE ports, I went for the D-Link DGS-110-08P, which is fairly old, but has all the features I need, including 8 POE ports, and because its not cutting edge it was fairly cheap on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/B00H09E4Z6\/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the \u2018zon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The POE HAT comes with its own set of spacers, which I have used for now, but hopefully will be putting my Pi\u2019s in a stackable case in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"438\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-438x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-438x1024.jpg 438w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-128x300.jpg 128w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-768x1794.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-657x1536.jpg 657w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-877x2048.jpg 877w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_132600023-scaled.jpg 1096w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 438px) 100vw, 438px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The spacers are easily screwed to the bottom of the RPi :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once fitted the POE HAT fits snugly onto the GPIO pins, and can be screwed from the other side:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"438\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-438x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-438x1024.jpg 438w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-128x300.jpg 128w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-768x1794.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-657x1536.jpg 657w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-877x2048.jpg 877w, https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_20200612_133257272-scaled.jpg 1096w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 438px) 100vw, 438px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it was a simple case of connecting my ethernet cable to one of the POE enabled ports on the switch. I used a cat6 cable for this. As the port was already enabled the RPi started to boot immediately. As expected the POE light on the switch illuminated to show it was drawing power from the port (eth2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the switch itself I can see the total amount of power being drawn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can also see how much is being drawn by on eth2 with one RPi connected:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when adding a 2nd RPi (running as a Kubernetes Master):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slowergram.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/poe4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a slight hum as you would expect, when the POE HAT fans kick in, but hardly noticeable.
